REPORT OF ACTIVITIES OF IMA KUNNAMKULAM FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2015
On September 1st : Executive Commitee meeting. Discussed the matters regarding reception to National and State office bearers of IMA and the Onam program of Neelambari, the State Cultural Wing to be conducted in association with DTF Trichur.
On September 1st : Air conditioner of Executive room and adjacent foyer was officially switched on by Dr.Koshy George T., the president of IMA Kunnamkulam, in the presence of AC committee and executive members of IMA Kunnamkulam.
On September 3rd : Eye Donation Fortnight programs of IMA Kunnamkulam.
The programs were conducted in two separate phases.
Ist Phase – Health Education Program at MD College, Pazhanji:
In the first phase, we conducted a Health Education Program at Mar Dionysius College, Pazhanji on 3rd Sept 2015.The meeting started with a welcome address by Mr. Thomas Mathew, the program officer of NSS at M.D. College. The meeting was inaugurated by Dr. Koshy George.T, the president of IMA Kunnamkulam. In his Inaugural address he thanked M.D. College NSS unit for their whole hearted support for the program. He requested the students to motivate their family and friends for organ donation.
After the short Inaugural Function, the following programs were conducted:
(a) A Health Education Class on Eye Donation was taken by Dr. C.P. Ravunnikutty, Ophthalmologist and President Elect of IMA Kunnamkulam. He detailed about eye donation in a simple language. After the class, he answered some queries raised by the students.
(b)The Distribution of Eye Donation Consent Forms to the college
Following the class Dr. Koshy George T handed over the eye donation consent forms to Mr. Thomas Mathew, to be distributed among the students with the promise that the filled up forms would be collected by IMA Kunnamkulam as soon as all are submitted.
On September 5th :State Level Onam Celebrations of Neelambari hosted by IMA Kunnamkulam and Thrissur DTF and Reception to the National President of IMA Padmasree Dr. A.Marthanda Pillai and National and State Office Bearers of IMA was conducted by IMA Kunnamkulam and Reception was accorded to Nammude Arogyam float at Kunnamkulam.
The evening program started off at 4.30 pm with the Pookkalam competition in which teams from 7 hospitals of Kunnamkulam took part. The colourful floral arrangements added to the festive atmosphere of the function.
The inaugural meeting started with a prayer song by Dr. Smitha.K.S., at 7.50 P.M. The meeting was presided over by Dr. Koshy George T, the president of IMA Kunnamkulam. The president welcomed the National president of IMA Padmasri. Dr. A. Marthanda Pillai, Immediate past president of IMA KSB Dr. A.V. Babu, Midzone vice president Dr. Abraham Varghese, Past National president Dr. V.C. Velayudhan Pillai, Past presidents of IMA KSB Dr. R.V. Asokan, Dr. P.K. Mohammed Rasheed,, Dr. Alex Franklin, Dr. G. Vijayakumar and Dr. K.V. Devadas , as well as Midzone joint secretary. Dr. Gopikumar, DTF Chairman Dr. Jain Chimmen, Neelambari Chairman Dr. Jose Ukken,, members of DTF Trichur and their families and members of IMA Kunnamkulam and their families. In his presidential address Dr. Koshy George said that IMA Kunnamkulam was honoured by the presence of the national president and other national and state leaders of IMA.
Dr. Jain Chimmen addressed the gathering and thanked IMA Kunnamkulam for hosting the state level onam celebration of Neelambari, in association with DTF Trichur.
The formal inauguration of the onam program of Neelambari, the State Cultural Wing of IMA KSB was done by the National president Dr. A. Marthanda Pillai by lighting the Nilavilakku. In his inaugural address, he congratulated IMA Kunnamkulam for conducting various activities put forward by National and State IMA. He also said that doctors cannot work 24 hours a day and he has requested the government to make 3 tier duty system to the doctors working at various health centers. He wished all a happy and prosperous onam season.
Dr. A.V. Babu, Immediate Past President of IMA Kerala State delivered the onam message. He thanked IMA Kunnamkulam for conducting such a program and wished everyone a healthy, joyful and prosperous onam season.
The Neelambari (the Cultural wing of IMA KSB) programs started off with an introduction to KALAKARANORU KAITHANGU (a helping hand to the artist) by the chairman of Neelambari, Dr. Jose Ukken. In his address, he thanked IMA Kunnamkulam for taking such an initiative. He said that if every branch of IMA KSB would follow the Kunnamkulam Model, we can support 107 senior artists in Kerala and that will show the social commitment of IMA.
Chenda artist Mr. Kadavallur Mohanan Marar was introduced to the gathering. He was a renowned Chenda Artist in Thrissur district till he had been diagnosed to have cirrhosis of liver and he underwent liver transplantation from Amritha Institute of medical sciences, Kochi 5 years ago.
For two years he was off the field, following the surgery. Now he is back to the field for the last 3 years teaching Chenda to students at home.
The honouring of Chenda artist Mr. Mohanan Marar was done by Dr. Abraham Varghese, Mid Zone Vice President of IMA KSB, by adorning him with a ponnada.
Then a cash award of Rs. 10,000 was handed over to the artist by Dr. Koshy George T., President of IMA Kunnamkulam. Then Mr. Mohanan Marar performed a short live demonstration of Chenda Melam..
Then Pookkalam competition prizes were distributed by Dr. K.V. Devadas, the past president of IMA KSB. There were 7 teams for pookkalam competition. 3 trophies were given away and consolation prizes were given to all the participants.
Felicitation was offered by Dr. V.C. Velayudhan Pillai, the past national president of IMA on behalf of all IMA leaders present. .
Mementos were given to all the national and state leaders who attended the meeting, by Dr. Koshy George.T., President of IMA Kunnamkulam.
The meeting was adjourned for variety entertainments conducted by the Cultural Wing and WIMA of Kunnamkulam. There were dances by tiny tots and ‘Thiruvathira Kali’ by WIMA and onam songs by IMA members and their families.
A short drama “Kalikaalan” was also staged by the members of IMA Kunnamkulam.
The program was followed by variety ‘Onam Sadhya’ which was very much appreciated by all the leaders and members alike.
On September 5th : Reception to Nammude Arogyam Float at Kunnamkulam
A warm reception was accorded to the float of Nammude Arogyam which reached Kunnamkulam during the function as part of the all Kerala tour to popularize the IMA Health publication. The National and State leaders joined the members of IMA Kunnamkulam to receive the float at Kunnamkulam.
On September 8th : 4 Members from IMA Kunnamkulam attended the SWC meeting held at Palakkad.
On September 8th : IInd Phase of Eye Donation Fortnight – Health Education Program at MOSCMM Hospital, Aduppootty:
On 8th sept. 2015, we conducted a program at Malankara mission Hospital, Kunnamkulam. The programme started with Dr. Ajith.T, the chairman of ACT FORCE of IMA Kunnamkulam welcoming the gathering of people from Adupputty, patients and their relatives at Malankara hospital, Nursing students and staff of Malankara Hospital. The meeting was presided over by Dr. Koshy George.T, the president of IMA Kunnamkulam. Dr. Koshy George in his presidential address thanked Malankara hospital for their cooperation with IMA Kunnamkulam for conducting various health educational and awareness classes for the public. Following the short inaugural function, the following programs were conducted:
- An awareness class on Eye donation was taken by senior ophthalmologist and Past President of IMA Kunnamkulam Dr. O.J. John. He said that the main purpose of those classes were making the people aware of the need for eye donation. He explained details regarding eye donation and corneal transplant in a simple and lucid manner.
(b)The Release of a leaflet on Eye donation by Dr. Mohan Thomas ,the Medical Superintendent of MOSCMM hospital and Chairman, Organ Donation Committee of IMA Kunnamkulam. The leaflet was in Malayalam and was prepared for WIMA Kunnamkulam by Dr. Rema Mukesh, Ophthalmologist at Malankara hospital.
(c)The Distribution of eye donation consent forms to all those who attended the class.
On September 16th : The First Aid Class and Training Workshop on Advanced Life Support ( ALS ) was conducted by ACT FORCE of IMA Kunnamkulam at Ansar Hospital, Perumpilav.
On 16th September 2015,a First Aid Class and ALS Workshop was conducted at Ansar Hospital Perumpilav,organised by the Life Support and Training Committee (Act Force) of IMA Kunnamkulam .
The program started with a welcome address by the IMA Secretary Dr.Saju.P.K. He welcomed the gathering of Nursing students and staff of Ansar Hospital.
The program was formally inaugurated by Dr Koshy George T., the President of IMA Kunnamkulam. In his inaugural address he mentioned that these classes were a continuation of first aid classes of IMA Kunnamkulam ACT FORCE, previous classes having been taken for ACTS volunteers at Kecheri, members of SAPARYA library at Punnayurkulam, residents of Aduppootty Colony and staff of Malankara Mission Hospital,Kunnamkulam and for staff and students of St.Joseph Hospital , Choondal.
The inaugural session was followed by two programs:
1.First aid class
A FIRST AID CLASS was taken by Dr Koshy George T, who demonstrated various techniques of giving first aid in case of accidents at home, school, workplaces etc., in a simple manner using commonly available materials like newspaper, cardboard boxes, and cotton clothes.
- ALS Training Workshop by ACT FORCE
A practical workshop on Advanced Life Support was taken by Dr Ajith. T, Anaesthesiologist of Malankara Mission Hospital, Aduppootty, Kunnamkulam . Newer methods in ALS and Cardio Pulmonary resuscitation in an ICU setting were demonstrated with the help of a mannequin we obtained from DTF Trichur for the programme. The training was very much appreciated by all the nursing staff of the hospital.
On September 16th :5 members of IMA Kunnamkulam attended DTF meeting at Trichur.
On 18th September : We conducted “SEPTEMBER-REMEMBER ME” program of Alzheimer’s month.
We conducted the program in 2 phases:
Phase I: A seminar on Alzheimer’s disease.
This program was conducted on 18th September, 2015 at Ansar Women’s College, Perumpilavu, in association with ARDSI (Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India) and NSS unit of Ansar Women’s College.
The program started with a welcome speech by Ms. Shameema K, the NSS programe officer, Ansar Women’s College. The meeting was presided over by Dr. P.K. Yaqoob, the principal of Ansar Women’s College. He thanked IMA Kunnamkulam and ARDSI officials for organizing such an important seminar at Ansar Women’s College, for making the pupils aware of existence of such diseases in the society.
The president of IMA Kunnamkulam, Dr. Koshy George. T. inaugurated the seminar. In his inaugural address, he mentioned the importance of making the timely and correct diagnosis of the condition. Then Major Gopalakrishnan, the national coordinator of ARDSI delivered the keynote address. After a short inaugural function, we conducted the following programs.
- Pledge taking:
Dr. Koshy George requested the students to take a pledge about the due care to be given to the Alzheimer’s patients in their families or in society. The students repeated the pledge recited by Dr. Koshy George.
- Release of leaflet on Alzheimer’s disease.
A leaflet in Malayalam, prepared by IMA Kunnamkulam was released by Dr. Koshy George T., President of IMA Kunnamkulam by handing it over to Dr. P.K. Yaqoob, the principal of Ansar Women’s College, to be distributed among the students.
- Awareness class:
A Health Education class on Alzheimer’s disease was taken by Mr. Aju Alocious, the DRCC project officer, Kottappadi. He detailed about the illness ,through different stories from his experience and it was very much appreciated by the students.
A group song by the students added colour to the program.
On September 22nd : We conducted our monthly CME . The speaker was Dr.Jijith Krishnan,Rheumatologist ,GMC Trichur.. He spoke on “Polyarthritis – How to go about and care”.
On September 22nd : IMA AMS X ray quiz was presented by Dr.Tomy.C.P. It was a case of Pleural Lipoma.
On September 22nd : After the CME, we had a Session on Insurance Policies for Doctors. Mr P Murali Chief manager Kunnamkulam , Mr Suresh Kumar branch manager LIC Chavakkadu , Mr Vijay Govind assistant branch manager LIC Kunnamkulam , Mr.T I Johnson and Mr Jose , Chief advisors of LIC Kunnamkulam and the speaker of the day Mr Rajendra Kumar were present in the meeting . Mr Rajendra Kumar spoke on insurance policies for doctors .
On September 22nd : Health Check up Program for members of IMA Kunnamkulam (Phase 2) – Bone Mineral Density Screening Program
On 22nd September, the second phase of the Health Check up activities for our own members was conducted at IMA house Kannipayyur on the day of our monthly CME in September. BMD estimation was done for all the members who were present for the CME . The program was inaugurated by Dr Koshy George T., the president of IMA Kunnamkulam . He thanked members for their whole hearted support throughout his tenure as the president of IMA Kunnamkulam. Printout of the results of BMD estimation was handed over to the members. The Program was very much appreciated by all the members.
On September 23rd :Phase II Program of Alzheimer’s month:
On 23rd September, 2015 we visited the day care centre “Smruthipatham” of KSID (Kerala State Initiative on Dementia) at Kottappadi. The nursing staff of the centre Sr. Sherly, welcomed the IMA team.
Dr. Koshy George T, the president of IMA Kunnamkulam explained the purpose of the visit. Dr. T.R. Louis, the past president of IMA Kunnamkulam and Chairman of Elderly Care Committee of IMA Kunnamkulam, appreciated the sincere service of the day care centre workers, for the needy ones. Then there was a medical check up for the inmates in which Dr. T.R. Louis and Dr. Baiju Ahsraf, Physician Ansar Hospital, Perumpilav examined the 17 inmates and necessary medicines were prescribed.
On September 25th : A First Aid Class and Training Workshop on Basic Life Support ( BLS ) , and Release of Road Safety Leaflets was conducted by ACT FORCE of IMA Kunnamkulam at Kunnamkulam Police Station and Distribution of Road Safety Leaflets conducted at the auto stands of Kunnamkulam .
On 25th September, 2015 a First Aid Class and BLS Workshop was conducted at Kunnamkulam Police Station for the Police officials of Kunnamkulam and Erumapetty Police Stations, organised by the Life Support and Training Committee (Act Force) of IMA Kunnamkulam.
The program started with a welcome address by the Kunnamkulam Circle Inspector of Police Mr.V.A.Krishnadas. He thanked IMA Kunnamkulam for taking the initiative for training the police officials in the Kunnamkulam Circle.
The meeting was presided over by Dr.Koshy George T., the President of IMA Kunnamkulam. In his presidential address he mentioned that these classes were a continuation of first aid classes of IMA ACT FORCE, previous classes having been taken for ACTS volunteers at Kecheri and members of SAPARYA library at Punnayurkulam ,at Malankara Mission Hospital, Aduppootty, Kunnamkulam , at St.Joseph Hospital, Choondal, and at Ansar Hospital, Perumpilavu.
The program was formally inaugurated by Dr.K. V. Devadas, past president of IMA KSB. In his inaugural address, Dr. Devadas stressed the point that these classes are meant not only for those who attend but also for their friends and families. It is our duty to teach others what we have learnt from these classes and that may help to save lives, he said.
The inaugural session was followed by four programs:

Vote of thanks was proposed by the S.I. Mr. Sreejith.K, the S.I.of Erumapetty police station.
On September 25th : IMA KUNNAMKULAM PROGRAMME ON ROAD SAFETY
- Release of 2 leaflets – “Road Rules for Drivers” and “Road Rules for Pedestrians”.
Release of the leaflets on Road Safety, both in Malayalam, prepared by IMA Kunnamkulam Act Force was done by Dr.K.V.Devadas, Past President of IMA KSB by handing over its copies to C.I. Mr. Krishnadas.V.A and Kunnamkulam S.I. Mr. Farshad .T.P. Copies of the leaflets were distributed to all the police officials.
- Distribution of leaflets to the Autorikshaw drivers.
After the BLS Workshop, the copies of the leaflets on road rules were distributed to autoriksha drivers at various taxi stands at Kunnamkulam by a team led by Dr. Koshy George T., president of IMA Kunnamkulam.
On September 27th : The Community Development Program of IMA Kunnamkulam at Mary Matha Boys’ Cottage ,Akkikkavu.
On 27th September 2015 : We conducted a Community Development program organised by the Community Development Committee and the Charity Wing of IMA Kunnamkulam at Mary Matha Boys’ Cottage, Akkikkavu. The program stated with a welcome speech by Dr.Saju.P.K, the Secretary of IMA Kunnamkulam. The meeting was presided over by Dr.Koshy George.T ,the president of IMA Kunnamkulam. Dr.Koshy George mentioned that IMA Kunnamkulam is very happy to conduct such programs that are aimed at directly or indirectly improving the health and quality of life of the people living in the villages. Dr.Koshy George also mentioned that this will be the last program of this year’s office bearers and we will be requesting the next year’s office bearers to continue such development programs in the Boys’ cottage during the next year also. Following the short inaugural function we conducted two programs.
- Health Education Class
A health education class on water borne diseases and methods of its prevention was taken by Dr.Koshy George. He discussed about water borne diseases and explained various methods of water purification in a simple language .He demonstrated the filtration method of water purification using water and sand.
- Donation of water purifier.
As a part of providing safe drinking water to the inmates of the cottage IMA Kunnamkulam donated a UV Ray water purifier to the cottage. The charity wing Chairman Dr.Mohamed Nissar handed over the water purifier to Mr.Saji, the manager of the Boys’ cottage.
On September 28th :
The district level program “ The Family Heart Care Program – phase 2 “ of Thrissur DTF was conducted at IMA House Kunnamkulam at a combined meeting organised by IMA Kunnamkulam in association with DTF, Thrissur. The meeting was inaugurated by DTF chairman Dr.Jain Chimmen . In his address he thanked IMA Kunnamkulam for taking up the heart care program Phase 1 and Phase 2 ,of Trichur DTF and conveyed best wishes for the program.
The meeting was presided over by Dr.Koshy George .T, President of IMA Kunnamkulam and the scientific session was chaired by senior physician Dr .N D .Varghese. Dr.Manoj Ravi, the interventional Cardiologist of Jubilee Mission Medical College took a class on “Preventive Cardiology –What should we do” in a simple and lucid manner, so as to explain the basics of prevention of heart diseases to the spouses of IMA members. It was a well attended meeting. 40 members attended with spouses and there was an active interactive session following the CME.
Dr.Santhosh Babu ,the DTF Convenor explained the importance of the program and thanked IMA Kunnamkulam for conducting 2 phases of family Heart Care Program at IMA Kunnamkulam.
On September 28th : A TOT session on Advanced Life Support was conducted at IMA House Kanippayyur for members of IMA Kunnamkulam and Thrissur DTF during the General Body meeting held in connection with the Family Heart Care Program – Phase II of Thrissur DTF. The president Dr. Koshy George T. introduced the session and he said that the session was being conducted so that members can continue the Jeeva Raksha program of IMA Kunnamkulam in future also. The session was taken by Dr. Ajith T., Anaesthetist, MOSCMM Hospital, Aduppootty, Kunnamkulam.
On September 28th : Dr. Jain Chimmen , the DTF Chairman released 4th volume of the WIMA News Letter Inner Voice, by receiving a copy from Mrs.Lily Jacob Roy, the editor of WIMA News Letter.
On September 28th : Ethics Pearls ; During the General Body meeting, Dr.Koshy George T., president of IMA Kunnamkulam briefed some points of Ethics in medical practice with the help of few slides received from the Ethics committee of IMA KSB.
